Ahhh it’s the first day of September! The mornings are chilly, leaves are changing, fall is on the horizon! Have you already started school? We don’t start until the 10th but we’re ready! We made the decision back in June to homeschool through an online academy. We are still waiting on our curriculum to show up (apparently a lot of people are using the same curriculum!) but our space is set up, crayons and pencils have been bought and a shiny new rose gold Chromebook has been purchased by Gramma. Kindergarten we are ready for you!
As you may know, our farmhouse is small. It’s about 1100 square feet and only two bedrooms. Our two kids share the master bedroom, not leaving any designated space for an office or school room. I thought about using the dining room table but I already run my business from there and we eat 3 meals a day there! I had to get creative and found a little spot in our living room that was just the perfect size for a desk. I think our homeschool area turned out cute and cozy and will be a great place to learn this school year!
I situated the desk between our fireplace and the couch. It’s right in front of a big window so a lot of natural light pours in! Plus it’s centrally located so I’ll be able to keep an eye on our soon-to-be 3 year old while I’m teaching (I never thought I would say that!). Homeschooling was never on my radar but we are trying to make the best of it. I know this will be a year of learning for both of us.
I bought this desk a few years ago and had it stored up in the barn. When I brought it down I was pleasantly surprised that it looked new! It looks like it is out of stock on the website but THIS one is similar. Since the desk is in our living room I went with an upholstered chair and added a pillow to help Parker sit further up. World Market has these gorgeous velvet pillows in store for $9.99! They come in a ton of colors. I grabbed the rust color for fall but want to go back for green.
I tried to keep the top simple and organized. I found the spinning desktop organizer on Amazon but of course it’s sold out now! I love this black wooden one and this white plastic one though. The wire basket is an old Target find that I had shoved in my closet but they still have them in store and on the site! The basket is full of learning materials that my aunt and mother-in-law bought for us when Parker’s preschool was shut down in March. We have been slowly working our way through them during this seemingly endless summer!
In our spinning organizer I have fat markers, skinny markers, scented markers, crayons, colored pencils, #2 pencils, glue sticks and scissors. Everything she will need to complete her assignments in one place! In the drawer I have extra glue, erasers, stickers, a dry erase pouch for practicing her name (Target dollar spot), Melissa and Doug writing mats and crayons (LOVE these!), a pencil sharpener and number flash cards.
After purchasing a new chair, the spinning organizer and school supplies I only spent about $150! Not bad for a cozy homeschool space for our kindergartner!
Tell me in the comments if you are homeschooling, distance learning or back at your brick and mortar school! I want to cheer you on no matter what school looks like for you!
I love hearing from you!
